Case Management Intern (Academic Year)
Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream (OCC)
OCC is a multi-purpose neighborhood resource center serving residents in the southern section of Carol Stream. OCC provides a wide range of community services including: casework, counseling, summer and afterschool programs, tutoring, mentoring, and community development.
Case Management Program
OCC provides practical assistance to the south Carol Stream Community by directly providing or connecting clients to resources that provide food, clothing, housing, employment opportunities, child care, basic household finance education, legal counsel, therapy services, etc. The role of staff and interns is to listen carefully to each client to accurately assess the situation and to strive to make a thoughtful and compassionate intervention.
After training, the intern will work directly with clients each week, fielding a variety of concerns. Through supervision, the intern will learn interview and assessment skills, gain understanding of community resources, provide referral information and develop as a professional helper. The intern will be well supported by staff and will be expected to make positive contributions to the department’s workflow. The intern will learn and perform reporting for department performance evaluations and grant requirements. Life skills group facilitation and other opportunities are available for those interested in work with children or older adults. Other responsibilities include advocating for clients, assisting with data entry, communicating to the community, scheduling appointments, and assisting with the annual Christmas Store and other activities as needed.
The intern will receive experience in the over-all working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry. The intern will gain valuable knowledge of the issues confronting immigrant families, the working poor, those who are attempting to move from welfare to work, and the social institutions (government, religious, business), which most impact these populations.
BA/BSW or MA/MSW student in social work, psychology or a related field. Outreach seeks interns that demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income and diverse populations who also support OCM’s Statement of Mission & Faith.
