Christmas Store: December 12, 2020

Update 11/24/2020  – What the Christmas Store will look like this year?

Limited Capacity

  • After consultation with the DuPage County Health Department, capacity in each room at OCC will be limited to 10 or less people at one time. In the gym (approx. 5400 square feet), capacity will be limited to 20 people.
  • We will admit shoppers on a continuous basis to limit wait times and to keep the flow moving throughout the building. In addition, we will have a designated entrance and exit locations at OCC to keep traffic flowing in one way.

Physical Distance

  • During in-person interactions at OCC, all participants will be encouraged to keep 6 feet of distance when physically possible. We have modified the set up of the store to make this possible, especially for shoppers and their shopper helpers while selecting gifs in the gym.

Masks

  • Facial coverings will be required to be worn over both your mouth and nose at all times.
  • Additionally, face shields will be made available to shoppers and volunteers.

Self-Certification

  • A self-certification form will be required by all staff members, shoppers and volunteers confirming that they do have any COVID-19 symptoms and have not any recent direct exposure.

Temperature Screening

  • Anyone participating the Christmas Store will have their temperature taken.

Duration

  • In order to serve as many families as possible and to provide ample space to spread out, we have eliminated some traditional aspects of the Christmas Store. We will not able to offer to the following this year – childcare, gift wrapping, shopper hospitality room and volunteer hospitality room. With these changes, shoppers will move through the Christmas Store quickly and will be on site for a shorter duration of time.
  • We have modified the store set-up and the role of the shopper helper to provide extra space for physical distancing, along with reducing the role to decrease the amount of time on site for the shoppers.

 Updates

  • We are monitoring guidance from both the DuPage Health Department and the CDC. We are preparing for last minute changes to allow for compliance with the latest recommendations and guidance.

Update 10/13/2020

The Outreach Community Center Christmas Store is still on the calendar for Saturday, December 12th. The committee has been hard at work making adjustments and with the store  just over two months away, we are excited to share an update on our plans.

What hasn’t changed…

  • Families will still purchase gifts for their children or grandchildren at 75% off of retail price
  • Shoppers will still register ahead of time for their shopping appointment
  • We will still have volunteers on site.  Volunteer spots will be limited and registration will open on November 1st
  • We still need your support in filling the gift tables. For more information, visit www.outreachchristmas.org

What has changed…

  • In observance of local health and safety guidelines, we will limit the number of shoppers and volunteers on site during the store.
  • In order to reduce the number of people on site, we will not be offering gift wrap as a service to our families.  This means volunteers will not serve in the gift wrap role.  Families will receive a gift wrap kit to wrap their gifts at home before Christmas.
  • We will not offer childcare services for our families while they shop.  This means we will not have volunteers serving in child care. Families will be asked to send one adult to shop at the Christmas Store.
  • Additional health and safety procedures in regards to COVID-19 will be in place, including temperature screening, face coverings and self-certification by all volunteers and shoppers.

What can I do now?

************************

The Outreach Community Center is committed to serving our local families through the cherished Christmas Store event.  As of now, the 2020 Christmas Store is scheduled for Saturday, December 12th. In light of COVID-19 and the Restore Illinois phases, the Christmas Store will look a little different this year when it comes to the setup, number of shoppers and volunteers we can have on site.

We have begun the work of adjusting aspects of the store to make sure we’re taking the necessary precautions. Your involvement may look different this year but the need for your support remains. Additional details regarding how you can support the store in person, through a gift drive or through prayer support will be announced in late September.

This event is made possible through the commitment and dedication of faithful volunteers, donors and local church leaders. We are thankful for this strong foundation as we re-work the structure in order to bring this store to the community. We are holding fast to the innovative spirit that gave life to this important event over 25 years ago.

The Christmas Store is a special one-day event held each December for families living near the Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream. Qualifying families can affordably shop for Christmas gifts for their children – at a savings of 75% off retail price. This is a win-win! Purchasing affordable gifts honors parents and grandparents, while proceeds from the Store are designated to Outreach Community Center’s case management services, which helps families throughout the year who need financial assistance.

The 2019  store served 333 families who shopped for 932 children at this annual event. Without the Christmas Store, many families would be unable to purchase new gifts for their children.
