As part of their Take Action Project, Girl Scout Troops 55627 and 50038 raised money through cookie sales in order to donate children’s books to the Books for Birthdays program. “Our girls love to read since stories allow us to explore different lands, learn about people and go on fun adventures. Books for Birthdays is a great way for the girls to share their love of reading with other kids in their community,” explained Troop Leader Katie Maas.
The Books for Birthdays program was designed to help improve reading proficiency amongst the children served at the Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream. Every child, 1st grade through middle school, receives a new book on their birthday, along with a personalized card, gift bag, and treats. The Hearts of Grace ministry also created a sharing library at Jubilee Village, where toddlers and moms have access to new books.
“As Girl Scouts, we strive to make the world a better place, and that starts in our own communities,” added Ms. Maas.
Without access to books at home, children often lag behind their peers in reading. Outreach is able to provide the help and support to our most vulnerable youth thanks to the generous donations from the community and the Girl Scouts!
