The Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream Learn 2 Earn middle school summer program is off to an amazing start!
The first week of the Learn 2 Earn program provided students the opportunity to participate in service learning activities, team building exercises, STEM, money management and job readiness classes, art, and various recreational activities. “Two years ago, we launched a career exploration component that gives students the opportunity to explore job interests through site base tours. During the first week of program, students visited the DuPage County Courthouse where they learned about the judicial system and various careers at the courthouse,” says Chantel Gamboa, OCC middle school program coordinator. Furthermore, students were provided a tour and attended a court session, followed by a meeting with a judge. Students had several questions about the services that were provided at the courthouse. “This was such an amazing opportunity for our youth, and one they seemed to enjoy,” Chantel adds.
In addition, through partnership with the Carol Stream Police Department, students participated in one of five sessions with Officer Castro. Students will learn drug resistance skills and healthy decision making, and will take a tour of the Carol Stream Police Department where they will learn about careers in criminal justice.
Lastly, the People’s Resource Center will facilitate science classes that will provide hands on project based activities for youth. Field trips will take place every Friday, and students can receive a weekly stipend based upon their effort and participation in the program.
