Learn-2-Earn Community Service Intern (Summer)
Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream
OCC is a multi-purpose neighborhood resource center serving residents in the southern section of Carol Stream. OCC provides a wide range of community services including: casework, counseling, summer and afterschool programs, tutoring, mentoring, and community development.
Learn 2 Earn Summer Youth Program
The L2E summer program provides educational support and teaches practical life skills necessary for the success of students entering grades 6-8. The program provides academic enrichment in Math, Language Arts, Science/Social Studies, Christian Education, Life Skills and Cultural Arts. The program also provides training in basic job readiness and social skills, development of positive character and self-confidence through various activities, and the modeling and teaching of Christian values and faith.
The Youth Services intern will partner with program staff to teach a classroom of up to 10 students, four days per week. Responsibilities include providing classroom instruction, developing and teaching lesson plans for Life Skills (social-emotional learning) class, leading morning devotions, facilitating team building activities and program evaluation. Other responsibilities include conducting individual SEL improvement assessments, maintaining a program-wide standard of classroom behavior and communicating behavior problems to parents.
The intern will receive experience in the over-all working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry and will gain knowledge of the assets and challenges of the diverse community served by OCC. The intern will gain a deeper understanding of the issues confronting “at-risk” youth and the supportive resources available to students and families. The intern will also have the opportunity to attend and participate in OCC staff meetings.
BA or MA student in social service, education, Christian education, or a related field. Some previous group or teaching experience with Junior High students is strongly preferred. Interns must demonstrate a desire to work with and minister to students. Some volunteer experience preferred. Outreach seeks interns that demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income and diverse populations who also support OCM’s Statement of Mission & Faith.
