Warrenville Youth & Family Services (WYFS) Link mentor Steve Clark was recently able to share one of his hobbies with mentors and mentees by leading a woodworking class. According to Leslee Cremer, Youth Services Director, each match was tasked with building a sailboat or jewelry box.
“I found the matches to be particularly engaged in learning a new skill that neither party had experience with,” says Leslee. “Many times mentors have the upper hand in an activity because they have more developed skill, but this activity put mentors and mentees on an even playing field.”
Mentoring students seemed very proud of their completed wood project; many students gifted their project to their parents.
The Link Mentoring program at WYFS matches young people with caring adults. These mentors develop friendships through shared activities and offer guidance, support and encouragement.
