Thanks to a pen pal exchange at Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream, young and old have been benefitting from a multigenerational friendship! For the past seven months, students from Jubilee Neighborhood School’s 4th and 5th grade class have been writing to older adults living at Colony Park. Each month, the pair would exchange a newsy letter with each other.
On May 16, the students hosted their older adult pen pals in their classroom at OCC. It was the first time they met each other face to face. According to Kim Van Oss, Older Adults activities coordinator, the older adult sat next to their student pen pal and each painted a windchime while chatting and getting to know each other better. Following the craft, the party goers enjoyed cupcakes and played balloon volleyball.
“It was heartwarming to see the young and old interacting with one another!” says Kim. “The party ended with big smiles and happy hearts.”
