Who We Are

The Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream (OCC) is a community-based program of Outreach Community Ministries. The Center is a multi-purpose, neighborhood resource center serving primarily the 6000 residents in the southern section of Carol Stream. The goal of the Center is to help the neighborhood residents work together to build a stronger community. This goal is achieved through a wide range of community services that assist people in making positive changes in their personal, family and community lives. Services include casework, counseling, summer and after school programs, tutoring, mentoring, and community development.

Outreach Community Ministries is a Christian community service organization, striving to put Christian faith into responsible action. The organization has been called into existence by local churches to respond supportively to the needs of young people and their families. The organization is committed to providing excellence in human services and demonstrating compassion for the whole person. Outreach Community Ministries also offers services through Warrenville Youth and Family Services (WYFS) and Wheaton Youth Outreach (WYO).

Superb Student Youth Program

The Superb Student Youth Program provides educational support and teaches practical life skills necessary for success for students in grades 6-8 who live in the South Carol Stream area. The goals of the program include the provision of academic enrichment; social emotional development through life skills small group sessions, the development of positive character and self-confidence through varied activities and relationships with staff and students; and the modeling and teaching of Christian values and faith.

The educational component of the program includes academic assistance and one-on-one tutoring. This component is also supplemented with classes in Christian Education, Life Skills and Cultural Arts. The program also incorporates recreational activities.

Intern Responsibilities and Opportunities

The intern will receive learning experiences in the overall working of a Christian, community based social service agency. The intern will gain valuable knowledge of the issues confronting “at risk” youth and will gain experience working with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of youth.  Although there is flexibility in designing the internship to fit the intern’s academic and personal needs, interns will learn positive and effective discipline techniques, will be challenged in leading both small and large groups and will help with curriculum development and activity planning and implementation. Interns will also work closely with staff, implementing goals and working through ideas and problems that may arise. In addition, the intern will also observe the holistic team approach to service which the Community Center practices.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Develop and teach lesson plans
  • Tutor students as needed
  • Facilitate life skills groups
  • Supervise, encourage, challenge and evaluate students at community service sites
  • Plan and teach a Christian education class and lead devotions
  • Facilitate team-building activities
  • Actively participate in weekly staff meetings
  • Program evaluation

Training and Supervision

The Intern will be supervised by the program staff. He/she will have the opportunity to join the OCC staff meeting to learn more about the many social services offered at the Outreach Community Center and their relationship to the SSP Program. MSW supervision is available.

The program meets at the Outreach Community Center during the academic year, Monday–Friday from 3:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m.

Superb Student internships are available for BA or MA students in the social service, education or Christian education fields. Must have a heart for working with and ministering to students. Some volunteer experience preferred. Applicants must be supportive of the agency’s statement of Mission and Faith.
