Who We Are

Outreach Community Ministries is a Chrhistian community service organization, striving to put Christian faith into responsible action. The organization has been called into existence by local churches to respond supportively to the needs of young people and their families. The organization is committed to providing excellence in human services and demonstrating compassion for the whole person.  Outreach Community Ministries also offers services through Warrenville Youth & Family Services (WYFS), Wheaton Youth Outreach (WYO), The Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream (OCC) and York Community Resource Center (YCRC).

Human Resources Department

The primary goals of the Human Resources Department are to provide support and leadership around the development and maintenance of a quality staff team. The activities of the human resources department include: 1) attracting, selecting, training, assessing and recognizing staff 2) attracting, selecting, training and assessing interns 3) oversight and implementation of compensation and benefits 4) diversity work 5) ensuring compliance with employment and labor laws 6) organizational communication and contributing to a culture of encouragement and support.

Intern Responsibilities and Opportunities

The intern will be exposed to most aspects of human resources management, working closely with the three-member Human Resource Department team, with an emphasis on recruitment, screening and implementation of staff events.  Specific contributions to the hiring process will include mailing and emailing job postings of open positions, posting job openings on websites, scheduling interviews, conducting phone interviews, observing in-person interviews and post- interview debriefs. Through this experience, the intern will gain a thorough understanding of the work of attracting and hiring a highly-competent, diverse staff able to carry out the organizational mission. The intern will assist with the logistics and planning for staff events focused on training, community building and staff recognition.

Training and Supervision

The intern will receive exposure to non-profit management and the overall working of a Christian, community based social service ministry. The intern will learn about human resources functions and basic management principles. The intern will participate in trainings and staff events that occur during the scheduled internship experience. Weekly or bi-weekly supervision will be provided.

Hours

Human Resources internships can be for the summer, a semester or for the year. Interns must be available for a minimum of 12 hours each week during business hours—Monday through Friday between 9 am and 5pm. Some availability on Thursdays is preferred for maximum participation in staff meetings and trainings.

Requirements

Human Resources internships are available for students enrolled in a bachelors or masters program. Strong organizational skills are required with basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Some social service or volunteer experience preferred. Applicants must be supportive of the agency’s statement of Mission and Faith. Interns must provide their own transportation.
