Puente del Pueblo recently celebrated Mother’s Day with a meaningful day of fun and pampering! The annual event, called “A Bridge to Mom,” is a combined effort of the women of Wheaton Bible Church and Iglesia del Pueblo.
According to Irene Owens, bilingual case manager, the objective of the event is to celebrate together and open a connection between women of the church and women in the community, especially the mothers of students in Puente’s after-school program. “We like to think of this event as a touch of love from God for our moms!” says Irene. “It is a day for women, by women, in which volunteers offer up their talents in love by providing professional haircuts, manicures, facials, massage, makeup and portraits.”
Beyond forging new friendships and reaching out in service, the event included a humorous skit and discussion time in which the gospel was shared. “This year women from the church arranged a hilarious sketch that depicted the lies that women believe and how they impact their relationships to their children and spouse,” says Irene. “The sketch opened up a time in which women from the church shared how teachings from the Bible influenced their understanding of their identity as women and mothers and how the gospel was the fountain from which they found salvation, restoration, significance and purpose.”
The responses from the women who attended were overwhelmingly positive:
“The event was beautiful, fun and, more than that, educational! Thank you for your time and patience.”
“Everything was beautiful and, above all else, I appreciated the small group sharing time. I liked getting to meet new people and I would like to stay connected to them.”
“So fun and beautiful. I loved it!”
Irene is grateful that most of the women in attendance expressed an interest in connecting at the church and staying connected to the women they met at the event.
