December provided an opportunity for middle school students in the Superb Student Program (SSP) at Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream (OCC) to serve their community. According to Jr. High Program Coordinator Chantel Gamboa, students took the lead in planning for the most recent service project. “SSP students chose to serve at DuPage Pads and contacted the volunteer coordinator to identify how they could help at their site. They were assigned the task of preparing 50 sack lunches to be dropped off at a local DuPage Pads site.”

Students organized the activity by identifying what items would be donated. Then, they packed the lunches and delivered them to Peace Lutheran Church on Wednesday, December 13. The students were able to serve 50 individuals that evening. “It was wonderful to see the students plan and execute this service learning activity,” says Chantel. “Moreover, the biggest impact was dropping the food off and getting to see other volunteers who were also giving of their time and efforts to help the homeless.”

The SSP program is gearing up for its second service opportunity in February 2018, when they will volunteer at the DuPage County Animal Care and Shelter. Students having been seeking donations to help support their endeavor to buy items to benefit the shelter.
