Learn-2-Earn Community Service Intern (Summer)

Outreach Community Center in Carol Stream (OCC)
OCC is a multi-purpose neighborhood resource center serving residents in the southern section of Carol Stream. OCC provides a wide range of community services including: casework, counseling, summer and afterschool programs, tutoring, mentoring, and community development.

Learn-2-Earn (L2E) Summer Youth Program
The L2E summer program provides educational support and teaches practical life skills necessary for the success of students entering grades 6-8. The program provides academic enrichment, training in basic job readiness and social skills, community service opportunities, development of positive character and self-confidence through various activities, and the modeling and teaching of Christian values and faith.

The intern will work alongside program staff to teach basic job readiness skills and emphasize the importance of teamwork. Responsibilities include supervising, encouraging, challenging and evaluating students at community service sites, facilitating team-building activities, leading morning devotions, planning and teaching Christian education classes, and organizing/leading planned special events during the summer. The intern will gain experience in leading both small and large groups, assist with curriculum development and activity planning, and learn positive and effective discipline techniques.

The intern will receive experience in the over-all working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry and will gain knowledge of the assets and challenges of the diverse community served by OCC. The intern will gain a deeper understanding of the issues confronting “at-risk” youth and the supportive resources available to students and families. Interns also have the opportunity to attend and participate in OCC staff meetings
