High School Program Intern (Summer)
Puente del Pueblo (PdP)
Puente is a ministry of Wheaton Bible Church and Iglesia del Pueblo. Outreach serves at Puente on behalf of Wheaton Bible Church, providing consultation, management and community services. Puente offers after-school and summer youth programming in West Chicago at Main Park and Timber Lake Apartments and Glen Arbor Community Church.
L.E.A.D. Program: High School
The high school program at Puente del Pueblo provides students in high school and early college with opportunities for further academic enrichment and support, development of life skills and basic employment skills, positive relationship building, college preparation, recreational activities and optional Christian Education.
The intern will help students develop in both academic and life skill areas through tutoring, mentoring, life skills presentations, career discussion and study time. Responsibilities include encouraging, challenging and evaluating students both academically and relationally, advocating for students, connecting tutors to students and managing schedules, tracking student’s college readiness progress and creating reports to send to parents and teachers. The intern will have the opportunity to model and share Christian values, conduct guided classroom teaching of established curriculum, organize activities and special events, assist with volunteer recruitment and oversee various program logistics. Opportunities for case management exposure and experience are available for interested applicants. For applicants with moderate or better Spanish skills, an intern would have a significant opportunity to practice Spanish while working with bilingual staff and students and communicating with Puente’s immigrant parent population.
The intern will receive experience in the over-all working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry and gain valuable knowledge and skills in working with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of youth and staff. Interns will work closely with program staff and will have the opportunity to contribute creative suggestions and ideas for program development. All interns in the summer cohort participate in weekly training with the Puente Director and other guest faculty designed to teach core principals from cross-culutral community development practice.
BA/BS or MSW students in social work, education, sociology, Spanish, psychology, youth ministry or a related field. Relational, flexible, mature, willing to take initiative and passionate about working with students. Bilingual ability beneficial, but not required. Must have a heart for working cross-culturally and embrace the theology of service to the vulnerable. Outreach seeks interns that demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income and diverse populations who also support OCM’s Statement of Mission & Faith.
Monday – Friday 8:00am – 3:00pm. Must be available at least 3 days/week.
The intern will be supervised by program staff and will participate in weekly group training and activities. MSW supervision is available.
