Youth Development Intern (Summer)
Puente del Pueblo (PdP)
Puente is a ministry of Wheaton Bible Church and Iglesia del Pueblo. Outreach serves at Puente on behalf of Wheaton Bible Church, providing consultation, management and community services. Puente offers after-school and summer youth programming in West Chicago at Main Park and Timber Lake Apartments.
Summer Youth Program
Summer programs at Puente del Pueblo provide students entering grades 2nd-8th with opportunities for further academic enrichment, development of social skills, positive relationship building, structured recreational activities and optional Christian Education.
The intern will help children develop in both academic and life skill areas and will model and teach Christian values and faith. Responsibilities include encouraging, challenging and evaluating students, guided classroom teaching, facilitating team-building activities, assisting with curriculum development, organizing and leading activities and special events, and the planning and execution of program logistics, in collaboration with staff. Optional opportunities include planning and teaching a Christian education class and leading devotions. The intern will consistently work alongside lead program staff. For applicants with moderate or better Spanish skills, an intern may have the opportunity to manage Puente’s summer application process which includes extensive direct contact with Puente’s immigrant parent population and a significant opportunity to practice Spanish.
The intern will receive experience in the over-all working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry and gain valuable knowledge working with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of youth and staff. All interns in the summer cohort participate in weekly training with the Puente Director and other guest faculty designed to teach core principals from cross-cultural community development practice.
Internships are available for BA or MA students in Social Work, Education, Sociology, Spanish, Psychology, Missions or Christian education fields. Must have a heart for working cross-culturally and embrace the theology of service to the vulnerable. Outreach seeks interns that demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income and diverse populations who also support OCM’s Statement of Mission & Faith.
40 hours/week; June 10 – August 14
A 24-hour/week option is also available.
The Intern will be supervised by program staff and will participate as a member of the PdP team. Interns will participate in weekly group training and activities.
