Program:
Superb Student Youth Program
The Superb Student Youth Program provides educational support and teaches practical life skills necessary for success for students in grades 6-8 who live in the South Carol Stream area. The program includes academic enrichment, recreational activities, social emotional development, the development of positive character and self-confidence, and the modeling and teaching of Christian values and faith. The educational component of the program includes Christian Education, Life Skills and Cultural Arts curriculum, as well as academic assistance and one-on-one tutoring.

Responsibilities/Opportunities:
The intern will work with program staff to develop and teach lesson plans, tutor students as needed, facilitate life skills groups, plan and teach a Christian education class, lead devotions, facilitate team-building activities, and supervise, encourage, challenge and evaluate students at community service sites. Other responsibilities include participating in weekly staff meetings and program evaluation.

The intern will learn positive and effective discipline techniques, will be challenged in leading both small and large groups and will help with curriculum development and activity planning and implementation. The intern will receive experience in the over-all working of a Christian, community-based social service ministry and will gain valuable knowledge of the issues confronting “at-risk” youth and the supportive resources available to students and families.

Requirements:
BA/BS or MA student in social work, education, or a related field. Preferred applicants would be available for both fall and spring semesters to more effectively build student relationships. Previous experience with junior high aged youth strongly preferred. Must have a strong desire to work with and minister to students. Some volunteer experience preferred. Outreach seeks interns that demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of low-income and diverse populations who also support OCM’s Statement of Mission & Faith.

Schedule/Hours:
Monday – Friday; 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm; January – May 2019

Supervision:
Individual supervision provided weekly by program staff. MSW supervision is available.
